A **task** is a single action with an owner and a due date. Commitments made in a meeting and follow-ups arising from contact are both captured this way.

Task types
----------

Tasks created directly from a record's timeline or from the **Tasks** page have no type. A task only takes one of two types when it is created from an interaction's follow-up:

- **Commitment**: something promised to a stakeholder.
- **Follow-up**: an action to be taken after contact with a stakeholder.

To create one, log an interaction from a record's timeline and, under **Follow-up**, choose **Add task**. That sub-form asks for a **Subject** (a short title for the follow-up task), a **Body** (details of what needs to be done), a **Task type** (Commitment or Follow-up), and a **Priority**. The task is linked to the interaction's stakeholder. See [Interactions](/articles/interactions).

Creating a task
---------------

There are two places to create a task:

- **From a record's timeline**: open a stakeholder, organisation, initiative, issue or group, then choose **Task** from the timeline's **Add** menu. The task appears on that record's timeline.
- **From the Tasks page**: from the left menu, expand **SRM** and click **Tasks**, then create the task there. Use this for tasks that are not tied to a single record.

Either way, fill in:

- **Title**: a clear description of the action.
- **Description**: additional context.
- **Due date**: when the task needs to be done.
- **Task owner**: the person responsible for completing this task.
- **Completed**: tick this when the work is done.
- **Attachments**: any relevant files.

Finding tasks
-------------

The **Tasks** page in the SRM menu shows every task in one place. Tasks attached to a record also appear on that record's timeline.

Your own open tasks also surface on the home dashboard: the pre-built SRM dashboard includes **My commitments** and **My follow-ups** widgets (counts of your Commitment and Follow-up tasks) and a **My Tasks** widget listing all of your tasks. See [Reporting in SRM](/articles/reporting-in-srm).

Completing a task
-----------------

When the work is done, open the task and tick **Completed**.

#### Permissions

Creating and editing tasks requires the **Stakeholder Manager** role (or Administrator / Team Lead). The **Stakeholder Viewer** role can see tasks but not change them. See [User roles](/articles/9176861358095-User-roles).
