An **organisation** in SRM is any external or internal body connected to your stakeholders: a government department, business, charity, community group, school, or any other entity. A single organisation record links together its stakeholder contacts, the interactions logged against them, and the initiatives it is involved in.

This article covers what an organisation record contains, when to create one, and how it fits with the rest of SRM.

An organisation record can exist before any of its people are named, so you can track a relationship at the body level on its own.

Creating an organisation
------------------------

1. From the left menu, expand **SRM** and click **Organisations**.
2. Click the **+** icon (*Create organisation*) at the top of the page.
3. Fill in the fields below.
4. Click **Save changes**.

What the record contains
------------------------

- **Title** (required): the name of the organisation. Shown under the *Name* column in lists and exports.
- **Description**: a rich-text area for background information about the organisation and its relevance.
- **Contacts**: one or more stakeholders who represent this organisation. Each contact pairs a **Stakeholder** with a **Role** describing this contact's role at the organisation. Drag a contact to the top of the list to set it as the primary contact.
- **Initiative(s)**: the initiatives this organisation is involved with or has an interest in.
- **Owner(s)**: the people on your team responsible for managing the relationship with this organisation. You can name more than one; they show in an **Owner(s)** card on the record's overview. This records accountability, not access. That is [teams](/articles/teams-in-srm).

If your engagement site has added [custom fields](/articles/custom-fields-for-srm-records) for organisations, they appear in a card at the bottom of the form and in a **Custom fields** card on the record's overview.

Contact details such as email, phone, and address live on the [stakeholder record](/articles/stakeholders), not on the organisation. Add the person as a stakeholder first, then link them here as a contact.

How organisations connect
-------------------------

The organisation is the link between stakeholders and the bodies they belong to:

- Each stakeholder **contact card** can name an organisation, attaching that stakeholder to it.
- **Interactions** are logged against both a stakeholder and an organisation. The organisation's timeline aggregates every interaction with anyone from that body.
- **Initiatives** can list one or many organisations as involved parties.
- **Issues** can name the affected organisation for full context.

Finding organisations
---------------------

The **Organisations** list shows every record you have access to, with columns for *Name*, *Interactions*, *Initiatives*, *Stakeholders*, and *Creator*. Click a column header to sort by it. The column selector adds *Owner(s)* and one column per custom field.

Use the **Search organisations** box for free-text matching against names, or click **Filter organisations** to narrow by initiative, stakeholder, owner, team, modified-by user, or any custom field.

The **Additional options** menu at the top of the list includes a **spreadsheet export** of the current view, respecting active filters.

Updating several organisations at once
--------------------------------------

![Ticking rows on the Organisations list to reveal the bulk action bar](https://engage.knowledge.civ.io/storage/hDMfhhts0a4kxpv3DxqW2PnUofhu2A9qUPsDhyBn.png)

Tick the checkbox on any row for the bulk action bar: **Edit associations** (add or remove **Initiative(s)** and **Owner(s)**), **Set team**, and **Delete**.

Filter the list first, then act. See [Filtering, columns and bulk updates in SRM](/articles/filtering-columns-and-bulk-updates-in-srm).

Working with the record
-----------------------

Every organisation has three tabs:

- **View**: the read-only overview, including the timeline of interactions logged against the organisation or any of its contacts. The sidebar lists the organisation's stakeholder contacts.
- **Edit**: the form covered above.
- **More...**: additional actions including **Delete**.

#### Permissions

Creating and editing organisations requires the **Stakeholder Manager** role (or Administrator / Team Lead). The **Stakeholder Viewer** role can see records but not edit them. See [User roles](/articles/9176861358095-User-roles) for the wider role model.
