**Notes** capture context that is not an interaction: meeting preparation, background research, internal observations. A note sits on the record's timeline alongside interactions and tasks.

Notes compared with interactions
--------------------------------

An [interaction](/articles/interactions) records an actual touchpoint with a stakeholder: it has a type, a date and participants. A note has none of those. If you spoke with someone, log an interaction. If you are recording what you know, think or plan, add a note.

What notes are used for
-----------------------

- Preparation ahead of a meeting: talking points, things to raise, sensitivities to be aware of
- Background research on a stakeholder or organisation
- An internal observation your team should know before the next contact
- Context on why an initiative or issue is being handled a certain way

Adding a note
-------------

Notes are added from the timeline of any SRM record: a stakeholder, organisation, initiative, issue or stakeholder group.

1. Open the record and find its timeline.
2. Click **Add** and choose **Note**.
3. Fill in:

    - **Title** (required): a short label for the note.
    - **Note**: the body of the note, with full rich-text formatting.
    - **Attachments**: files such as documents or images.
4. Save. The note appears on the record's timeline.

Finding notes
-------------

On any record's [timeline](/articles/timeline):

- Use the **Notes** tab to show only notes.
- Use the keyword filter to search across interactions and notes.

Notes are also included when you export a record's activity, so they carry through to reporting.

#### Permissions

Notes have their own permission set. Creating and editing notes requires the **Stakeholder Manager** role (or Administrator / Team Lead). The **Stakeholder Viewer** role can read notes but not change them. See [SRM Roles](/articles/srm-roles).
