An **interaction** is your record of a single communication or engagement event with a stakeholder: a meeting, a phone call, an email exchange, a survey response, a social media reply. Every other view in SRM (the stakeholder timeline, the initiative report, the organisation activity feed) is built from them.

Creating an interaction
-----------------------

There are two ways to record an interaction: the full form in the **Interactions** area, or the quick log form on a record's timeline (covered under *Capturing an interaction quickly* below). To use the full form:

1. From the left menu, expand **SRM** and click **Interactions**, then the **+** icon (*Create interaction*).
2. Fill in the fields below.
3. Click **Save changes**.

What the record contains
------------------------

- **Title** (required): a short subject line, specific enough to be recognised in a list.
- **Type of interaction** (required): see the list below.
- **Date** (required): when it happened, not when you logged it.
- **Notes**: the substantive content. What was discussed, agreed, raised, or committed to.
- **Stakeholder** (required): the primary person involved.
- **Organisation** (required): the body the stakeholder is acting on behalf of.
- **Initiative(s)**: one or more programmes this interaction relates to.

Interaction types
-----------------

The built-in types are:

- **Email**: email exchange
- **Meeting**: in-person or remote
- **Phone**: telephone call
- **Social media**: social media exchange
- **Survey**: survey response captured against the stakeholder

![Choosing Meeting from the Type of interaction dropdown on the create form](/storage/j76sey5234YIyzGRawyG3npQqccbksYMdveSq6EK.gif)

Interaction types are plugin-based, so future builds may add more (for example automatically logged outbound emails).

### Interactions created automatically

Where a stakeholder's contact email matches a user account on your engagement site, a survey submitted **while signed in** creates a **Survey** interaction on their timeline automatically. The organisation comes from the matched contact card, and if the survey sits in a project linked to an initiative, the initiative is filled in too.

Anonymous submissions are not matched. An email typed into a survey question is not used to identify the submitter. See [Users and stakeholders in SRM](/articles/users-and-stakeholders-in-srm).

Attachments
-----------

You can attach files to an interaction. Attachments are stored with the record and appear with the interaction on the timeline.

Finding interactions
--------------------

The **Interactions** list shows every record you have access to, with columns for *Subject*, *Type*, *Date*, *Stakeholder*, *Organisation*, *Initiative(s)*, and *Creator*.

The list is ordered by **Date**, newest first: the date the interaction happened, not when the record was entered. Click any column header to sort by it instead. The column selector adds *Issue(s)*, *Team*, *Created* and *Updated*.

![The Interactions list with Subject, Type, Date, Stakeholder, Organisation and Initiative columns](https://engage.knowledge.civ.io/storage/lWtzi8heBLTd8cwnHw12JOVoRcP2MGDreZXOjeu4.png)

Use the **Search interactions** box for free-text matching against subjects. Use **Filter interactions** to narrow by *Type*, *Organisation*, *Initiative*, *Stakeholder*, *Issue*, *Team*, *Created by* or *Modified by*.

The **Additional options** menu at the top of the list includes an **Export** of the current view as a spreadsheet.

Updating several interactions at once
-------------------------------------

![Ticking several rows on the Interactions list and using the Change type bulk action](https://engage.knowledge.civ.io/storage/asNCNAOPnO0aPgQGJuOybja9sH2k4RL75mjWztgg.gif)

Tick the checkbox on any row for the bulk action bar: **Change type** (set the **Type of interaction**), **Edit associations** (add or remove **Initiative(s)** and **Issue(s)**), **Set team**, and **Delete**.

Filter the list first, then act. See [Filtering, columns and bulk updates in SRM](/articles/filtering-columns-and-bulk-updates-in-srm).

Working with the record
-----------------------

Every interaction has three tabs:

- **Preview**: the read-only detail page. The sidebar shows the linked stakeholder, organisation, initiatives, and any linked Engage projects.
- **Edit**: the form covered above.
- **More...**: additional actions including **Delete**.

The quick log form
------------------

The quick log form is the shorter route for day-to-day logging. On a record's **View** tab (for example a stakeholder), click **Add** on the timeline and choose **Interaction**. The quick log form contains:

- **Type**: the format or channel of the interaction.
- **Initiative(s)**: limited to the initiatives the stakeholder is linked to.
- **Organisation**: limited to the stakeholder's organisations. Leave it blank for a personal interaction.
- **Summary**: a brief summary of what the interaction covered.
- **Comment**: additional notes or details.
- **Attachments**: files to attach to the interaction.
- **Follow-up**: optionally create a follow-up issue or task (see below).

![Opening the interaction quick log from the timeline Add button](/storage/GN99PH3uFGhNSJ000gAQJ6evIobviWIKy6MGVfuN.gif)

The interaction shows up on the record's timeline immediately and is also visible from the linked organisation and initiatives.

Following up with an issue or task
----------------------------------

The **Follow-up** section on the quick log form lets you raise a follow-up as you log the interaction:

- **None**: log the interaction with no follow-up.
- **Add issue**: choose an **Issue action**: *Create new* to raise a new issue with a title and description, or *Add to existing* to link this interaction as a source interaction of an existing issue. See [Issues](/articles/issues).
- **Add task**: create a follow-up task via a sub-form with **Subject** (a short title for the follow-up task), **Body** (details of what needs to be done), **Task type** (Commitment or Follow-up), and **Priority**. The task is linked to the interaction's stakeholder. See [Tasks](/articles/tasks).

#### Permissions

Creating and editing interactions requires the **Stakeholder Manager** role (or Administrator / Team Lead). The **Stakeholder Viewer** role can see records but not edit them. See [User roles](/articles/9176861358095-User-roles).
