 Stakeholder groups

**Stakeholder groups** are your own segmentation of the stakeholder register. Where an organisation describes where a stakeholder belongs in the real world (an agency, a business, a charity), a stakeholder group describes how *your team* chooses to slice the register: *Workshop attendees Round 2*, *Heritage advocates*, *Affected landowners*, *Industry representatives*.

A stakeholder can belong to any number of stakeholder groups at once.

**Stakeholder groups are not user groups.** A stakeholder group segments SRM stakeholder records. A **user group** classifies platform user accounts (for example *Public member*, *Content manager*, *Team member*) and is set on the user record, not the stakeholder record. The two are separate and do not affect each other.

What you can do with a stakeholder group
----------------------------------------

A stakeholder group is a reusable segment. Once stakeholders are in one, you can:

- Filter the **Stakeholders** list to that group with the **Group** filter.
- Export the filtered list to a spreadsheet, including each stakeholder's interaction count.
- Apply a bulk action to everyone in the group, such as re-scoring sentiment.
- Target outbound communications, on sites with the SRM outbound email extension.
- Name a segment that does not map cleanly onto an organisation, such as *Critics*, *Champions* or *Media contacts*.

The **Group** filter is available on the **Stakeholders** list only. Other SRM lists and the SRM dashboard widgets cannot be narrowed to a stakeholder group, so group-level reporting means filtering the stakeholders list and exporting it rather than building a dashboard.

Creating a stakeholder group
----------------------------

1. From the left menu, expand **SRM** and click **Stakeholder groups**.
2. Click the **+** icon (*Create stakeholder group*) at the top of the page.
3. Fill in:

    - **Title** (required): the group's name.
    - **Description**: a rich-text explanation of what this group represents and the criteria used to include stakeholders in it.
4. Click **Save changes**.

Adding stakeholders to a stakeholder group
------------------------------------------

Stakeholder groups are populated from the stakeholder side, not from inside the group:

1. Open a stakeholder's **Edit** tab.
2. In the sidebar, use the **Group(s)** multiselect to attach one or more groups.
3. Save the stakeholder.

Finding and using stakeholder groups
------------------------------------

The **Stakeholder groups** list shows every group with columns for *Title*, *Stakeholders*, and *Creator*. Filter it by *Team* or *Modified by*, and tick rows to **Set team** or **Delete** in bulk. Click into a group to see its description. The *Stakeholders* count links to the group's **Stakeholders** sub-page (*Stakeholders in \[group title\]*), listing every stakeholder in the group.

To work with the people inside a group:

- From the **Stakeholders** list, use the **Filter stakeholders** button and choose the group. The list now shows only that segment, and any **CSV export** from the **Additional options** menu will export that segment.
- To put a whole cohort into a group in one go, filter the **Stakeholders** list, tick the rows and use **Edit associations**. It adds to each stakeholder's existing groups rather than replacing them. See [Filtering, columns and bulk updates in SRM](/articles/filtering-columns-and-bulk-updates-in-srm).

#### Permissions

Creating and editing stakeholder groups requires the **Stakeholder Manager** role (or Administrator / Team Lead). The **Stakeholder Viewer** role can see them but not change them. See [User roles](/articles/9176861358095-User-roles).
