 Getting Around SRM

SRM (stakeholder relationship management) is where your team tracks the people and organisations behind your engagement work: who they are, how much influence they have, how they feel about the work, and every conversation you have had with them.

This article covers what SRM holds, where to find it, and what you see when you open it.

Using SRM alongside projects and participation tools
----------------------------------------------------

SRM works on its own. Where a site also runs the engagement side of Civio Engage (projects, surveys, maps, events), the two join up in two ways:

- An **initiative** in SRM can be linked to one or more **projects**, so a consultation sits inside its wider stakeholder context.
- A **user account** on your engagement site is matched to a **stakeholder record** by email address. Once matched, what the person does on the public site (survey submissions, downloads, RSVPs, project follows) appears on their stakeholder timeline without anyone logging it.

Neither is required to use SRM. If your engagement site does run projects, [Getting Around Civio Engage](/articles/understanding-civio-engage) is the equivalent article for that side.

The difference between users and stakeholders
---------------------------------------------

This is the one distinction worth getting straight before you touch anything.

A **user** is an account on your engagement site: someone who registered and can sign in. A **stakeholder** is an SRM record: someone your team is tracking a relationship with. Any user can become a stakeholder, but **most stakeholders are not users**. Many of the people you need to track will never register on your engagement site.

The two are linked by the email address on a stakeholder's contact card, automatically, wherever they match. There is no setting that turns every registration into a stakeholder. [Users and stakeholders in SRM](/articles/users-and-stakeholders-in-srm) covers this in full.

Finding SRM
-----------

From any page in the admin interface, open the left-hand menu and click the **SRM** icon.

![The SRM icon highlighted on the left-hand icon rail, with the SRM menu open beside it](https://engage.knowledge.civ.io/storage/PujWtp5BTlkIoaHIAmoQeOSW1oEpz6h12EPWqoR1.png)

No SRM icon? Your account may not have an SRM role. Check with your administrator. See [SRM Roles](/articles/srm-roles).

The SRM record types
--------------------

SRM is seven record types. Everything else is a view over them.

List

What it holds

**Stakeholders**

The people. Influence, interest, sentiment, contacts, and the full history. [More](/articles/stakeholders)

**Interactions**

Individual touchpoints: a meeting, a call, an email, a survey response. [More](/articles/interactions)

**Initiatives**

Programmes of work, each with a status and an optional link to Engage projects. [More](/articles/initiatives)

**Organisations**

The bodies stakeholders represent, with their people as contacts. [More](/articles/organisations)

**Issues**

Concerns and problems to resolve, with a status, priority and owner. [More](/articles/issues)

**Stakeholder groups**

Your own segments of the community, for targeting and reporting. [More](/articles/groups)

**Tasks**

Commitments and follow-ups with owners and due dates. [More](/articles/tasks)

Notes are the eighth record type, but they have no list of their own. A [note](/articles/notes) lives on the record it relates to.

The SRM dashboard
-----------------

SRM ships with a pre-built home dashboard. It holds stakeholder and issue counts, the two "needing attention" tables, your commitments, follow-ups and tasks, and two charts showing the shape of your register.

The layout is yours to change. **Add new widget** adds any of the fifteen SRM widgets, and you can drag them around. [Reporting in SRM](/articles/reporting-in-srm) covers the set.

Who can see SRM records
-----------------------

Two things decide it, and they are independent:

- **Your role**: **Stakeholder Manager** can create and edit, **Stakeholder Viewer** can only read. Administrators and Team Leads get the full set. See [SRM Roles](/articles/srm-roles).
- **Your teams**: if your engagement site uses teams, each SRM record belongs to one team, and you see the records your teams own plus any record with no team set. See [Teams in SRM](/articles/teams-in-srm).
