Categories help users discover relevant projects by organising them by topic (tags) or location (regions). When you assign categories to projects, you make them more discoverable and create connections between related content.

Categories serve two key purposes:

- They help participants find relevant consultations through search
- They automatically link related projects together

Understanding Categories
------------------------

There are two types of categories in Civio Engage:

- **Tags** - Organise projects by topic (e.g., environment, transportation, parks)
- **Regions** - Organise projects by geographic location

Both regions and tags can function as standalone pages accessible via navigation menus, or they can be added as content blocks within projects.

Category Use Cases
------------------

When a project is assigned to a category:

- Users can search by category name to find all related projects
- Users can follow categories to receive notifications about new or updated projects
- Projects can display region blocks that link to other projects in the same area
- Project cards display linked categories as clickable tags, making it easy for community members to discover related content

For example, a user interested in environmental initiatives can search for "environment" and find all projects tagged with this category, or follow the category to receive updates.

Following Categories
--------------------

Users can follow categories (regions and tags) directly from category pages by clicking the **Interested** button. When a user follows a category, they will receive notifications about new or updated projects within that category.

Administrators can view a list of followers for each category in the dashboard. These followers can also be targeted when sending outbound notifications and emails.

Viewing All Categories
----------------------

1. Navigate to **Settings** in the left-hand menu
2. Click **Categories**, then **Region** or **Tag**
3. This displays all available categories for your website

Adding a New Region or Tag
--------------------------

1. Navigate to **Settings** in the left-hand menu
2. Click **Categories**, then **Region** or **Tag**
3. Click **+Add region** or **+Add tag**
4. Complete the following fields:

    - **Title** - Name of your category
    - **Summary** - Brief description (appears in previews)
    - **Body** - Detailed description
    - **URL slug** - Automatically generated, but can be edited
5. Add a **Primary image** to make the category visually appealing
6. Click **Add block** to include additional content (optional)
7. Click **Save** when finished

#### Pro Tip

Create rich category pages by adding content blocks like projects lists, maps, or events. These make your category pages more informative and engaging for users.

Editing or Deleting a Region or Tag
-----------------------------------

1. Navigate to **Settings** in the left-hand menu
2. Click **Categories**, then **Region** or **Tag**
3. Locate and click on the category you want to modify
4. Make your changes and click **Save**, or click **Delete** to remove it

**Note:** Deleting a category cannot be undone. Before deleting, ensure the category is not being used by any active projects.

Using Categories in Projects
----------------------------

To assign categories to a project:

1. Edit your project
2. Scroll to **Advanced settings**
3. Under **Categories**, select relevant tags
4. Under **Location details**, select relevant regions
5. Save your changes

Adding Category Content Blocks
------------------------------

You can add category content blocks to:

- Project pages - to show related regions or topics
- Site pages - to create landing pages for specific regions or topics

To add a category content block:

1. Edit the page where you want to add the block
2. Click **Add block**
3. Select **Regions** or **Tags** from the dropdown
4. Configure the display options
5. Click **Add** and then **Save**
